The District is Delightful and Delicious
The District is Delightful and Delicious
(a drabble competition for "The West Wing")
On Election Day, the free-for-all starts. Take as many themes as you want, no matter how many new ones you've already had. Challenge closes on 1 December 2008.
(I'll be doing the scoring next week guys, so if you have any other drabbles you wanna post...)
As my television watching habits cycle, so do my desires to read and write fanfiction for particular shows. I thought I might be able to influence others to share in my current cycle, and after reading old drabble challenges and favourite pieces of fiction, I thought maybe, just maybe, a drabble contest might go over reasonably well.
Sure, you can all tell me to go screw myself... but, please keep the following in mind: one, it's only one hundred words; two, it doesn't take long to throw a drabble together; three, if you're suffering from writer's block, sometimes scribbling down one hundred words can jump start an idea for another project; four, it'll be nice to have some new writing to share with other TWW fans.
So in that spirit, I'm presenting a good-spirited competition for writing drabbles for "The West Wing." I hope you'll all participate. It should be fun! :)
The Rules:
1. Each drabble must be, for the purpose of this contest, a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 200 words.
2. The drabbles can be any rating (gee, pea.gee, pea.gee.xiii, arr, en.sea.xvii) as long as they're properly labeled.
3. The drabbles can be any pairing and any genre as long as they adhere to the spirit of the contest.
4. Crossovers are acceptable.
5. Themes for the drabbles are the titles of episodes from "The West Wing." This can mean that a drabble can be written about the title itself or the episode. For example, someone choosing the theme "Manchester" can write about something that should have happened (or might have, lol) in the episode or about something else---time spent in Manchester, a discussion about Manchester United, a stolen moment during which it's mentioned, and so on.
6. Participants can write more than one drabble and for more than one theme. Multiple drabbles can be written for the same theme. However, before 4 November 2008, each participant can only write the first drabble of any given theme three times. After that date, if there are any vacancies, participants can have a free-for-all for the remaining unused themes and can continue posting drabbles for the other themes until the closing date.
7. Posting pieces will take place at this entry. The themes are posted in comments to this LJ post. Participants can reply to the appropriate theme/comment to place their drabbles in the right place. No themes can be booked in advance; it's first-come, first-serve. In the subject line for the comment, please write this information: title, pairing, rating. The following information isn't required, but would also be appreciated: spoilers, genre, warnings.
8. The closing date is 1 December 2008. The scores will be tallied after that. Prize banners will be issued to the top scoring participants in the week after the posting has ended.
9. Any disputes with the scoring should be made privately, to me, through e-mail (sugar@crimsonchampagne.com) or through LJ messages.
The Scoring System:
1. A participant will receive 5 points if their drabble is the first they've written and it is the first drabble posted for a theme.
2. A participant will receive 3 points if their drabble is the first they've written but it isn't the first drabble posted for a theme.
3. A participant will receive 2 points per drabble for every other piece written and posted.
4. A piece without a pairing will receive 1 point; a piece with a heterosexual pairing will receive 2 points; a piece with slash or femslash will receive 3 points; a piece with a threesome or any other sort of multiple and amourous grouping will receive 4 points.
5. Crossovers featuring other television shows that are based in the D.C. area ("Bones," "24," "Criminal Minds," "Murphy Brown," "NCIS," "The X-Files," etc.) will earn 2 points, while crossovers with books, movies, and other television shows will earn 1 point. However, this isn't meant to be an incentive for crossover drabbles.
There are bonus points also up for grabs, based on the comings and goings on TWW:
1. If a character in the piece is holding a folder or briefing memo, it will be worth 1 point---2 points if the folder is blue.
2. If a character in the piece says something in Latin, it will be worth 2 points.
3. If a character says "what's next?," it will be worth 1 point.
4. If a character quotes the Constitution, it will be worth 2 points.
5. If a character or the narrative refers to a musical, it will be worth 2 points.
6. If a character hollers for their assistant, it will be worth 1 point.
7. If President Bartlet, in the text of the piece, provides trivia or asks someone else something pertaining to trivia, it will be worth 2 points.
8. If Leo hollers at or lectures someone, it will be worth 2 points.
9. If Abbey calls someone a jackass, it will be worth 2 points.
10. If Josh says "s'up?" or "'kay," it will be worth 2 points. If he tousles his hair, it will be worth 1 point.
11. If Donna straightens or ties Josh's tie, it will be worth 1 point.
12. If Sam freaks out or goes off on a flight of fancy, it will be worth 1 points.
13. If Toby is bouncing a ball or checking something off on his list, it will be worth 1 points.
14. If Sam and(/or) Toby have lost their talent or are trying to find it again, it will be worth 2 points.
15. If CJ is in an evening dress, it will be worth 1 point. If CJ is mocking Carol's spelling, it will be worth 2 points.
16. If a Secret Service codename is used, it will be worth 1 point.
I hope you all decide to participate. I hope these rules make sense. If anyone has any questions, comments, or sees huge holes in my rules' logic, please comment or e-mail me.
If you'd like to invite others to participate, please share the link and invite them. The more the merrier!
